What communities is he a member of that should be considered part of his rhetorical situation? 2. What is the occasion for the letter? What is the broader context? What is happening in the United States at the time of King's letter? What specifically led King to write this letter? 3. Who is King's audience? What are their beliefs or convictions? Is there an audience beyond to whom the letter was addressed? 4. Knowing what you know right now, what do you think King's purpose will be in his letter? Take notes on the content, purpose, and rhetorical strategies in each 'chunk'.
